Boulder Chautauqua Pedestrian Improvements

The Chautauqua Pedestrian Improvements project was designed to improve pedestrian safety along Baseline Rd. in Boulder, CO. Elements of this project included the addition of 5' sidewalk and ADA ramps along the southern side of the roadway, a 450' extension of a natural rock retaining wall originally constructed in the early 1900's, natural rock staircases, reconstruction of the main park entrance intersection, 1000 linear feet of new storm drainage, a new gas main, dry utility relocations, asphalt patching, 42 landscape boulders, striping, signage, and landscape restoration.

Chautauqua Park is Boulder's premier park and tourist destination receiving over 300,000 visitors per year. The entire length of the project sits adjacent to this historic park. Given the social and economic importance of the park and its proximity to the project site J-2 was tasked with maintaining vehicle and pedestrian traffic at all times. This was achieved with tremendous success with very little impact to the travelling public. Traffic control plans were adjusted daily as work progressed to ensure that safety was the priority and the park was always accessible.

The retaining wall that was constructed had oversight from the Landmark Board given the historical importance of the original wall that was being extended. To achieve the aesthetic we excavated rock materials from the site storm sewer installation and site excavation to supplement the imported rock retaining wall materials. This ensured the colors and textures were close to the original wall. The constructed wall has received a great amount of praise from the Landmark Board and other park patrons given the close resemblance to the original wall.
